Google won Spirit Airlines’ bankruptcy auction with a $10 million bid for de-identified operational data intended to improve AI.

Google won a bankruptcy auction for data, software code, and operating records belonging to bankrupt low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines Holdings. The winning bid was $10 million, according to a notice from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York dated Aug. 14.

The acquired material includes approximately 100 million emails and 500 million Microsoft Teams chats and collaboration records. It also includes information relating to revenue, aircraft operations, employee output, audits, and fraud.

The transaction excludes personal and privileged information, including 97.5 million passenger records and approximately 50.2 million Free Spirit loyalty-program records. Court records state that the transferred data will be processed to remove associations with particular customers.

Google said it would use the assets to improve artificial intelligence and would not receive personal information. The company also said an independent third party would remove personally identifiable information before the transfer.
