Over 16% of new U.S. utility-scale solar capacity added through September 2026 included operable co-located batteries, versus 2% in 2017.

· ComputeLabs Research · from the October 30, 2026 edition

The U.S. Energy Information Administration, or EIA, reports that more than 16% of new utility-scale solar capacity added in 2026 through September was co-located with operable battery storage. The comparison figure for 2017 is 2%, based on data reported by operators.

The denominator is newly added utility-scale solar capacity, not the entire installed U.S. solar fleet. The measure also does not represent the share of solar electricity generation supplied through batteries.

The qualification “operable” distinguishes the reported batteries from storage that is merely proposed or planned alongside solar projects. The supplied excerpt provides no associated battery power capacity, energy capacity, duration, or data-center customer allocation.
