Shanghai Superconductor’s third-phase manufacturing base topped out; its planned annual capacity totals 15,000 kilometers of 12-millimeter superconducting tape.
· ComputeLabs Research · from the October 18, 2026 edition
The milestone is structural completion of the facility. On October 18, Shanghai Superconductor’s second-generation high-temperature superconducting tape and headquarters campus in Pudong topped out. The third-phase base has planned capacity of 15,000 kilometers per year of 12-millimeter-wide tape.
The company-wide capacity figure is a future full-production target. The report says total annual capacity would reach 20,000 kilometers after the new base is completed and reaches its intended production level. It also projects a leading global position in second-generation high-temperature superconducting tape, rather than documenting that ranking as a current operating result.
The new production line has a separate length specification. The base is planned to house a line producing single continuous tapes three kilometers long, described by the report as a global first. Initial products are scheduled for the first quarter of 2027; the three-kilometer single-tape length should not be confused with annual output capacity.
