Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant entered a localized ceasefire for power-line repairs after six reactors had relied on emergency diesel since August 20.

A localized temporary ceasefire began around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant under an arrangement mediated by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Its purpose is to allow repairs to damaged transmission infrastructure and restore external power to the plant.

The facility lost connection to its final external transmission line on August 20 because of military activity. Emergency diesel generators have since supplied the electricity required to cool all six reactors and the pools holding spent nuclear fuel.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said the plant’s diesel reserves were running low. It warned that the site could face a complete loss of power within days if external supply was not restored or additional fuel could not be delivered.

Ukrainian technicians are to begin repairing the line after mines are cleared from the relevant area, with International Atomic Energy Agency personnel monitoring the work. Director General Rafael Grossi said this was the seventh comparable temporary ceasefire he had mediated during the Russia–Ukraine conflict to reduce nuclear-safety risks at the plant.
