China’s Fengqing V1.0 AI ensemble weather-forecasting system passed operational review and entered service, providing an 11-day effective global forecast horizon.

· ComputeLabs Research · from the October 17, 2026 edition

Fengqing V1.0 moved into operational service following review. The National Supercomputing Internet announced the milestone at the 2026 National High-Performance Computing Conference. The system’s scope is global short- and medium-range ensemble weather forecasting.

Development was led by China’s National Meteorological Center. Collaborators included the Xiong’an Meteorological Artificial Intelligence Innovation Research Institute, the National Meteorological Information Center, and the National Supercomputing Internet. The announcement therefore identifies a joint meteorological and computing-infrastructure development effort.

The stated effective global forecast horizon is 11 days. The announcement also claims that overall forecasting performance exceeds the AI ensemble-forecasting system of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, or ECMWF. The supplied report does not provide the evaluation period, forecast variables, scoring methods, or numerical comparison supporting that claim.
