NVIDIA demonstrated Optics-on-Interposer prototypes integrating optical engines onto GPU silicon interposers; it disclosed no commercialization timetable.
· ComputeLabs Research · from the October 31, 2026 edition
NVIDIA presented Optics-on-Interposer (OOI) prototypes at SEMICON West 2026 in San Francisco, according to the supplied reports. The technology is described as a next-generation approach to co-packaged optics (CPO).
The reported design replaces the conventional organic packaging substrate with a larger silicon interposer and integrates optical engines directly onto the interposer carrying the GPU. This places optical-to-electrical conversion closer to the processing chip within the package.
The report attributes the technical explanation to Nikola Nedovic, principal research scientist at NVIDIA Research, and says NVIDIA has received prototype samples. It provides no measured bandwidth, power consumption, latency, yield, or manufacturing-cost results.
NVIDIA disclosed no commercialization timetable in the supplied material. The separate industry commentary about possible future production dates is not a company commitment and does not establish commercial readiness.
