Google Cloud opened managed Cloud SQL for MySQL blue-green deployments in preview, supporting upgrades through continuously synchronized parallel environments.

Google announced a preview, rather than general availability, of fully managed blue-green deployments in Cloud SQL, starting with MySQL. The feature supports major database-version upgrades and configuration changes through the Google Cloud console or automated command-line interface scripts.

The blue environment is the existing production instance, which continues serving live application traffic during staging. Cloud SQL creates a temporary green environment, upgrades that clone to the target database version, and keeps it synchronized through continuous replication.

Teams can test applications against the synchronized production-data copy before switching traffic. Google cites moving from MySQL 8.0 to 8.4 as an example and describes the approach as minimizing downtime, without supplying a quantified downtime guarantee in the excerpt.

Before cutover, teams can cancel the upgrade and leave the original blue instance unchanged. After cutover, the old blue instance can be retained as a manual fallback; the source does not characterize that fallback as an automatic rollback mechanism.
