Huadian (华电) connected Golmud (格尔木) Unit 1, a 660-megawatt coal-fired generating unit, to the grid and began loaded trial operation.

· ComputeLabs Research · from the October 4, 2026 edition

Unit 1 of Huadian’s (华电) Golmud (格尔木) Phase I coal-power project connected to the grid during the National Day holiday. The unit entered trial operation under load. The reported milestone is grid connection and loaded testing, rather than an announcement of completed commercial operation.

The Phase I project consists of two 660-megawatt generating units. The update concerns Unit 1 only and does not report the operating status of Unit 2. These figures describe electricity-generation capacity, not data-center power demand or contracted AI-compute capacity.

The project is located in the Kunlun Economic Development Zone (昆仑经济开发区) in Golmud, Qinghai (青海). The Xinhua (新华社) report describes it as China’s highest-altitude ultra-supercritical coal-fired power project under construction and a key project in Qinghai’s energy-development plan. No specific supply agreement with a data-center operator is identified.
