South Korea’s Financial Services Commission (金融委员会) ordered financial institutions to complete security inspections and report results following personal-data breaches.

· ComputeLabs Research · from the October 4, 2026 edition

South Korea’s Financial Services Commission (金融委员会), or FSC, called for rapid, comprehensive security inspections across the financial sector. Chairman Lee Eog-weon issued the statement after an emergency Sunday meeting with executives from financial institutions and industry associations. Institutions were asked to complete internal checks promptly and submit their results to regulators.

Preliminary findings identified less closely monitored infrastructure as an attack target. The source says some attacks targeted external websites and servers used by loan agents and employees. It does not name the affected institutions or quantify the number of exposed personal records.

AI involvement was raised as a possibility, not established as a finding. Lee said regulators could not rule out attackers’ use of AI and called for faster development of systems capable of using AI to defend against AI attacks. President Lee Jae-myung (李在明) was briefed on the breaches and responses, and instructed authorities to investigate thoroughly and formulate countermeasures.
