Italy’s Senate approved the “sustainable nuclear energy” enabling bill (“可持续核能”授权法案) on September 23. According to the supplied CCTV News report relayed through Telegram, the Chamber of Deputies had approved it in June.

The legislation authorizes the government to develop an overall nuclear legal framework and a national sustainable nuclear energy development plan (国家可持续核能发展计划). Its coverage includes construction and operation of new facilities, decommissioning existing facilities, radioactive waste and spent-fuel management, approvals, safety supervision, and environmental protection.

The government identifies energy diversification, reduced fossil-fuel dependence, and improved energy security as its objectives. The environment and energy security minister said current planning could permit nuclear generation as early as 2033–2034 (“最早可能于 2033 年至 2034 年实现核能发电”); this is an official conditional timetable, not an operating date guaranteed by the legislation.
