Google Cloud made Filestore agent volumes available, automatically provisioning isolated, persistent file workspaces for agent sandboxes in milliseconds.

· ComputeLabs Research · from the September 15, 2026 edition

Google announced the availability of Filestore agent volumes, a fully managed file-storage capability for agent workspaces. It was co-designed with Agent Substrate and complements the compute environments supplied by Agent Substrate on GKE and GKE Agent Sandbox.

When GKE is configured to use Filestore, launching a sandbox for a new agent task automatically allocates and attaches a dedicated, isolated, persistent file workspace in milliseconds. Google says the system manages the volume lifecycle as the agent fleet scales, removing the need to create, attach, and tear down individual volumes manually.

The announcement contrasts this approach with moving state between sandboxes and centralized storage, manually managing local disks, or operating self-hosted file systems. It identifies cold-start latency, operational complexity, and idle preallocated storage costs as trade-offs in those existing approaches.

Workspace protection includes strict boundary controls and granular permissions intended to keep agents within their designated directories. Google describes the capability as high-performance and elastic, but the supplied excerpt contains no specific storage-capacity limits, throughput benchmarks, price schedule, or service-level commitment.
