Google open-sourced GKE agentic migration, converting AWS EKS infrastructure code into Google Kubernetes Engine configurations with mandatory human approval gates.
· ComputeLabs Research · from the September 24, 2026 edition
Google announced the open-source release of GKE agentic migration, a purpose-built agent plugin for migrations from Amazon Web Services’ Elastic Kubernetes Service (AWS EKS) to Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). The workflow converts infrastructure as code (IaC) through automatically created pull requests, according to the accompanying Telegram reporting.
Google identifies several problems with general-purpose model-assisted migrations: invented resource properties, deprecated fields, omitted network or identity configurations, and lost context across interdependent files. It positions the plugin as an AI-assisted pipeline protected by deterministic guardrails rather than unrestricted prompt-based conversion.
The announcement highlights structured state persistence, boundaries between platform and application-team roles, and mandatory human approval gates. These features address long-running migrations in which platform engineers prepare the target environment and application developers subsequently migrate workloads.
Google also criticizes tools that modify live clusters directly because they bypass Git, disrupt continuous integration and continuous delivery/deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, and complicate rollbacks. The supplied material contains no measured migration-time reduction or completed customer migration benchmark.
