Google Cloud launched its developer plugin for AI coding agents, bundling authentication, authorization, project management, and official-documentation access.
· ComputeLabs Research · from the September 10, 2026 edition
Google Cloud introduced the google-cloud-developer plugin as an installable bundle of skills and tools for AI coding agents. Its foundational functions cover authentication, authorization, project management, and guardrails for Google Cloud command-line operations through `gcloud`.
The plugin also bundles configuration for the Developer Knowledge Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Google says this provides agents with up-to-date grounding in its official developer documentation.
The release follows the Agent Plugins specification, described as an open, vendor-neutral standard for packaging Agent Skills and MCP servers into portable, interoperable units. The standard supplies a unified manifest and directory structure rather than requiring different configurations and wrappers for every AI assistant.
Google presents the plugin as a way to package capabilities that are more useful together, including domain knowledge, workflow guidance, and interaction with live environments. The plugin is published in the Google Agent Skills repository; the supplied excerpt does not provide measured productivity gains or a complete list of compatible coding environments.
