Google Cloud made its self-managed VMware solution generally available, providing full administrative control on dedicated Z3 bare-metal infrastructure.
· ComputeLabs Research · from the October 27, 2026 edition
Google Cloud announced general availability of its self-managed VMware solution as part of the Google Cloud Modernize portfolio. It runs VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) on dedicated Google Cloud bare metal and complements, rather than replaces, the existing Google-managed VMware Engine service.
The self-managed offering uses VCF 9.x and provides full root administrative access across ESXi, vCenter, NSX Manager, and the remaining VCF components. The supplied comparison identifies VMware Engine as using VCF 5.2 with role-based vCenter administration and Google-managed patching, updates, and monitoring.
Customers or partners manage the new offering’s updates through VCF Operations Management tools, retaining control over maintenance windows and third-party monitoring integrations. Google positions it for organizations migrating existing VMware workloads, exiting data centers, or using cloud infrastructure for secondary disaster recovery without changing established operating practices.
Broadcom’s quoted statement identifies dedicated Z3 bare-metal infrastructure, portability of existing VCF subscriptions, and the ability to apply Google Cloud commitments and discounts. The announcement does not provide a quantified cost saving or a universal migration-performance result.
