NVIDIA reported using 8,192 GPUs on JUPITER at Germany’s Jülich Supercomputing Centre to simulate a 104-qubit fault-tolerant quantum-computing system. This is a GPU-based simulation, not a report that NVIDIA built or operated a physical 104-qubit quantum processor.
The supplied reporting identifies NVIDIA GH200-based systems and says the simulation incorporated realistic hardware noise. NVIDIA described it as its largest comprehensive simulation of a fault-tolerant quantum processor.
The research tested a technique called magic-state cultivation. NVIDIA reported approximately 90% lower physical-qubit requirements compared with previous methods, while another supplied summary frames that reduction as the technique’s potential; it is not a measured reduction in hardware deployed commercially.
NVIDIA also said the simulation reduced work that would otherwise take weeks to days. The sources identify pre-hardware design testing and optimization as uses of the simulation, while noting that technical challenges remain before practical application.
