The International Energy Agency’s governing board agreed to accelerate reserve releases, including over 20 million barrels of diesel.

The International Energy Agency’s governing board agreed to accelerate the release of remaining volumes under its March 2026 collective action responding to the Strait of Hormuz crisis. The accelerated release includes more than 20 million barrels of diesel to be made available as soon as possible.

The board reported that approximately 330 million barrels had already been released. A separate agency update said the March-announced oil-release program would exceed 400 million barrels; the delivered amount and the program total are distinct figures.

The board also encouraged members with oil-production and refining capacity to increase supplies of crude oil and refined products, particularly diesel. This encouragement is separate from the agreement to accelerate stock releases and is not a quantified production commitment.

An earlier report said the United States had suggested supplementing the release with an additional 100 million barrels. That proposal should not be confused with the separately reported agreement to complete outstanding releases, and the supplied material does not establish approval of the U.S. request.
