Toshiba (东芝) plans ¥60 billion in Philippine hard-disk-drive manufacturing investment, targeting doubled production capacity during fiscal 2027.

· ComputeLabs Research · from the October 2, 2026 edition

Financial_Express, citing Nikkei, reports that Toshiba plans approximately ¥60 billion, or $380 million as converted in the source, to expand hard-disk-drive (HDD) production in the Philippines. The report describes this as Toshiba’s first major HDD investment in several years.

The reported objective is to double HDD production capacity during fiscal 2027 (在 2027 财政年度内将硬盘驱动器(HDD)产能提高一倍). This remains an investment plan and capacity target, rather than a completed expansion or recorded increase in shipments.

The same report places Toshiba’s current market share at slightly above 10%, measured by storage capacity, with a 30% medium-term target. Those shares are explicitly capacity-based, not revenue or unit-shipment shares, and the 30% figure is an objective rather than an achieved position.

At the report’s publication, Seagate shares were down 12.4% and Western Digital shares 11%, while their year-to-date gains remained 200% and 140%, respectively. These were intraday observations, not closing returns.
