Samsung Electronics and SK hynix reportedly rejected Korea Electric Power Corporation’s KRW25 trillion, five-year electricity-prepayment proposal, intended primarily for grid infrastructure.

A Telegram report citing Yonhap and unnamed industry officials says Samsung Electronics and SK hynix rejected Korea Electric Power Corporation’s (KEPCO) proposal. The requested KRW25 trillion represented combined prepayment for five years of electricity bills.

The proposed split was KRW20 trillion from Samsung Electronics and KRW5 trillion from SK hynix. KEPCO reportedly said the prepaid funds would primarily support core electricity-grid infrastructure.

The chipmakers reportedly cited uncertainty in the industry outlook and the burden that large advance payments would place on their medium- and long-term operating strategies. They had communicated their rejection to KEPCO, according to the report; it describes neither a completed prepayment nor a funded grid-construction commitment.
