🇨🇦Canada suspended U.S. trade negotiations after last-minute American proposals expanded to cover the automotive sector.

Carney announced that Canada had suspended trade negotiations with the United States, saying progress had been insufficient to achieve Canada’s objectives. He said Canada could not accept the U.S. offer and would not concede to the demands presented.

According to Carney, last-minute U.S. changes also covered the automotive sector. He additionally said the United States had moved to limit Canada’s capacity to enter other trade agreements, while describing the proposed deal as untenable because the United States had “asked too much and offered too little.”

Canada had been prepared to remove remaining counter-tariffs affecting key industries, particularly steel, aluminum, and automobiles. A senior Trump administration official separately said Canada had sought slightly more relief from Section 232 tariffs than the United States was prepared to grant and had requested additional concessions.

The U.S. account characterized the talks as frank rather than hostile and said its proposal would have substantially reduced tariffs and given Canada a strong position among exporters to the U.S. market. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said no new discussions were scheduled, while Carney met virtually with provincial and territorial premiers to discuss the suspension.
