South Korea’s maximum electricity demand reached 95.321 gigawatts on August 7, the highest level recorded during 2026 up to that date. The increase was attributed to a continuing heat wave.

Available reserve capacity stood at 8.2 gigawatts. An emergency electricity-supply alert is triggered if reserve capacity falls below 5.5 gigawatts.

The South Korean government expected electricity demand to continue rising during the following week. The cited factors were persistent hot weather and increased industrial production after the end of the summer holiday period.
